Personality: Maya was raised by the Brothers of the Order of the Impending Storm, an order of warrior monks who rule over the planet of Athenas. The Brothers had hoped to shape her into a strong arm for them- someone willing to keep the people scared, and to make examples of the ones who dared to defy the Order. (“Defy” in this case having a fairly loose definition.) And, to the public, they had built her up as such. But in reality, Maya was unaware of what they wanted of her, and instead grew up to be quite different. The Brothers kept her on a tight leash- until she came to Pandora, she had never set foot outside the walls of the Abbey- but all the while placated her with promises that ultimately, she would be out in the world, fighting evil and defending Athenas from harm. The fact that they never delivered on these promises, and instead talked down to her, calling her “Child” well into her 20’s, and paraded her to the public like a show dog, only served to annoy her. She began to question the Brothers, demanding to know why she was being forced to make speeches (something she was not great at anyway) instead of fighting this vague and menacing “evil” they’re always on about. They brushed her off with more condescending promises, which only served to annoy her more.
This also instilled something like wanderlust in her, and she began looking for clues about her Siren heritage. If nothing else, her years at the Abbey had given her a love a reading and a strong desire to learn, and in this search she found notes from an archaeologist on Pandora. Having been trained all her life to fight and constantly denied the chance to put her skills to use, she thought the murder and mayhem that ran rampant on the planet sounded amazing. It was a discovery that ultimately shaped her future.
When she discovered the Brothers’ true purpose for her, she was furious. They asked her to kill a group of unarmed people, guilty only of not paying the Order their precious tithe, and she refused. She refused angrily and vehemently as the pieces fell into place. The Order had done one thing right- Maya was ruthless. The idea of being used to scare people, to bully them, into doing what the Order wanted made her furious. Without hesitation, she shot and killed her handler, Brother Sophis, and declared that she was leaving Athenas and heading for Pandora.
Learning what the Brothers had in store for her cut deep, though, and she harbors quite the dark, vicious streak because of it. On the rare occasions she makes mention of the Abbey or Brother Sophis, there’s something menacing lurking under her words. (“I’ll never forget what the Head Monk told me right before I left the Abbey: ‘Child, you have so much left to learn’ he said. I imagine he would have continued speaking, had I not pulled the trigger.”) During the quest line “Victims of Vault Hunters”, the Vault Hunters are told that there are people coming after them, for one reason or another. Mostly revenge. In Maya’s case, it’s Sophis’ brother- his literal brother- looking to avenge the death of his older sibling. One by one, the Vault Hunters find their would-be assassins, dead by unknown hands. Everyone has something to say about each dead body, but of her own assassin, found next to a poisoned bottle of beer, all Maya has to say is: “Consider yourself lucky. That poison must have worked quickly. I wouldn't have.”
That’s not to say her time at the Abbey was a waste. They had trained her to fight, and they had done it well. Maya delights in the thrill of combat, and absolutely does not think twice about taking a life if she has to. And though she has no idea where Sirens come from and why, she has embraced her Siren powers wholeheartedly, and honestly? She thinks they’re pretty sweet. (She’s been known to shout “I love my powers!” every once in a while.) Also, probably because there was little else to do in the Abbey but train, meditate, or read, she is incredibly intelligent, at least when it comes to book smarts. There are many things about social interaction and people skills that she doesn’t quite get (she admits it herself that she has absolutely zero clue about romance, and seems quite surprised when someone calls her attractive), and can sometimes come off a little blunt or tactless because of this. However, she is always willing to learn. As she says, “Wisdom is strength.”
Of the group of main Vault Hunters in Borderlands 2- a group that also consists of a dishonorably-discharged ex-soldier, an assassin, a native Pandoran who has, among other things, been accused of cannibalism, a teenage genius who built a killer robot for the school science fair, and a literal psycho- Maya could be considered the more… calm and collected one. I wouldn’t go so far as to use words like “kind” or “morally upstanding”, but she has the most level head on her shoulders. Maya is relatively reserved, with a penchant for deadpan humor and dry remarks, but also surprisingly genuine. She offers sincere thanks when helped up by an ally, and sincere congratulations when bested in a player duel. The Brothers schooled her in the art of meditation, which may be part of the reason she’s a bit more low-key than the others. Though, after arriving on Pandora, she finds she doesn’t have much patience for long stretches of downtime. She’s tasted freedom, she’s had a chance to stretch her wings and get her hands dirty, and she loves it. Give her chaos, give her violence. It’s everything the Brothers promised her but never gave her.
Abilities/Powers: Each Siren has a special ability unique to her, though no one quite knows the origins of these powers, and why each one is different. Maya’s primary skill is called phaselock, but depending on which of her skill trees the player chooses to invest in, she can expand upon her phaselock to be more crowd control with some general buffs, the team medic, or an elemental powerhouse. Since I’m taking Maya from endgame + DLCs, it’s possible for her to have dipped into more than one skill tree based on her level.
There are a lot of skills that buff things like damage, movement speed, reload speed, or magazine size- pretty typical skills for a first person shooter. A lot of those don't translate well into an RP setting, so I'll be disregarding them.

When Moxxi, resident barkeep and all-around MILF, had approached the Vault Hunters for their help in orchestrating a wedding between members of Pandora’s two biggest rival bandit clans, Maya would be the first to admit that she was way out of her depth with this one. Things like “romance” and “marriage” were pretty far off her radar. Living in the Abbey had never given her the opportunity to explore those kinds of things, and with the endless hours of training and “preparation”, she had neither the time nor the desire to figure things out on her own. It seemed she wasn’t totally alone in her feelings, because by and large, the others sort of shrugged and figured, why not? It’s just another job, and with that mentality, Maya decided she may as well tag along.
Maya was quickly reminded that though she had seen the Brothers bestow their blessings on a fair share of weddings over the years (a thought that made her sick and angry at the same time), the Pandoran tradition of matrimony was a whole different animal. The Vault Hunters soon found themselves on a hunt for ingredients for a love potion, which had them kidnapping an infant and breaking into a distillery, among other things. (Yes, really. The absurdity of some of the things they were asked to do was not lost on Maya, but oh, how she enjoyed it, in her own dry sort of way.) When it came down to the actual mixing of the potion, the group was asked to make the baby cry- they needed some tears for an ingredient, and Maya was already convinced this farce wasn’t going to work, so she didn’t inquire further. Surprisingly, physical violence against a baby had most of her Vault Hunter cohorts hesitating, so it was agreed that they would tell the baby something to make it cry. Easy enough, she supposed.
Everyone had their own ideas. Gaige insisted that telling the child of the mere existence of country music should be enough to make it cry. Krieg just wanted to shout at it. Axton wanted to inform it of the dangers of ECHOnet memes, and on and on. Maya felt it pertinent to share a bit of wisdom from her own life- something with a little more meaning than memes and country music. It felt a little silly, sharing wisdom with a baby, but while the other were bickering amongst themselves, she gave the baby the flattest look she could muster and simply said, “Everyone will tell you small lies, except the people you love, who will tell you large ones.”
In the end, the baby did cry, though Maya was never sure if it was because of what she said or the fact that the others had been arguing for so long that the poor thing was just confused and frightened. The others also stopped their bitching long enough to just turn and stare at her.
Maya could only stare back, blinking as they gazed at her. “What?”

There are a lot of skills that buff things like damage, movement speed, reload speed, or magazine size- pretty typical skills for a first person shooter. A lot of those don't translate well into an RP setting, so I'll be disregarding them.
MAIN ACTION SKILL
✴ Phaselock – Maya is able to target a single enemy and suspend them in mid-air in an extra-dimensional bubble for a limited time. While suspended, the enemy cannot move. She can phaselock anything from smaller people and creatures, up to some of the larger robots Hyperion has to offer. Some enemies are too big or stationary to be phaselocked- vehicles, planes, mounted turrets, giant world-ending alien creatures- but they may still take damage from phaselock’s elemental skills.
CATACLYSM TREE
✴ Helios – Phaselocked enemies explode into flame. The explosion damages nearby enemies as well.
✴ Cloud Kill – When Maya shoots an enemy, this creates a lingering cloud of acid. It deals corrosive damage to any enemies who touch it. Only one cloud can be active at a time.
✴ Blight Phoenix – When Maya kills an enemy, she sprouts “wings” of fire and acid. They cause incendiary/corrosive damage to any enemies that get near her.
HARMONY TREE
✴ Sweet Release – Killing a phaselocked enemy releases orbs of healing energy that heal Maya and her allies.
✴ Restoration – Maya is able to charge her bullets with healing energy. Shooting allies heals them a small amount.
✴ Res – Maya can use her phaselock ability on an ally to partially heal them. Not a lot, but if they are in dire condition, it will be enough to get them back on their feet and fighting again.
Items/Weapons:
☠ HellFire [IMG] - an SMG manufactured by Maliwan. It converts normal ammo to elemental ammo, and deals incendiary damage. Maliwan weaponry excels in elemental damage, and enemies shot by the HellFire have a chance of bursting into flames. It will have a full clip of ammo in it, but will otherwise be limited by ammo supplies in Haven.
☠ Law [IMG] - a pistol manufactured by Jakobs, given as a reward in the quest "Won't Get Fooled Again" by Marshall Friedman. It looks like an old-fashioned six shooter, with a bayonet underneath the barrel. Like all Jakobs weapons, it fires as fast as its wielder can pull the trigger. It, too, will have a full round of ammo in it, but be limited by the ammo found in Haven.
☠ Flame of the Firehawk [IMG] - a shield given by fellow Siren, Lilith, as a reward for the quest "Cult Following: The Enkindling". All shields protect their wearers from a certain amount of melee or gun damage. Each strike depletes the shield a small amount, and once the Flame of the Firehawk is depleted, it creates a fiery explosion around its wearer. It will continuously generate explosions until its wearer takes no damage for a few seconds, then it will recharge.
