[ He takes a quick second to frown, but though his expression smooths out, he's a little more subdued when he speaks. ]
I shoulda just said thank you from the start. It's-- it's been a while since I've gotten something without a hitch tied to it. Like, "Hey, we rebuilt your ship, but expect us to call in some favors pretty soon." And I guess it just... took me by surprise.
[ Peter pauses, and he adjusts the collar of his shirt, feeling awkward. He's finding more and more that Maya is coaxing unfiltered honesty from him, when all his previous dealings consisted of sly remarks or half-truths.
It's different, he thinks, like the ECHO recordings, like this relationship. It's new. But unlike those things, he doesn't know what to think about this. He trusts Maya, but he's unsure about this newfound vulnerability. Even so, he forces himself to press on. ]
So-- thank you. Seriously. It, uh... it means a lot.
[ She's never had a problem with honestly- really, more of her problems come from a lack of tact sometimes- but she understands that in the life Peter lives, honesty is not really a thing, so she appreciates these moments of sincerity. ]
You're welcome.
[ She says it softly, angling her head to press a light kiss to the side of his neck ]
[ That gets a smile out of him, but then he looks thoughtful-- and then slightly worried. ]
It was just a gift, right? I'm not, like, forgetting an important date or a holiday or something? Like, it's not "Couples Day" on Ch'Garthia today, is it?
Alright, cool. Just making sure I didn't forget something.
[ He relaxes, though only slightly. It's just now ocurring to him that he'll have to remember dates and anniversaries and special occassions and holidays and oh no, he's gonna be terrible at thinking up presents--
And then he's realizing that he's worried about things in this nebulous, far-flung future, when it used to be he'd play everything by ear, and the only thing he'd worry about was where his next job would take him--
And then he's realizing that if he's actually worried about this kinda stuff, then that means he's in this with Maya for the longhaul. Which he thought he had been, or at least he thought he was going to make a valiant attempt at it. But it's really setting in now, because--
He still needs to figure that part out. That warm, twisting ache is in his chest again, the one he only seems to feel when Maya's around or in his thoughts, and he still can't put a name to it -- he only knows he likes it. ]
I'll have to figure out a way to repay you. [ It's not quite what he wanted to say, not really, but he does sound grateful and sincere all the same. ]
[ For her own part, Maya had picked the songs she'd picked for a reason, but she has no idea how deeply he reads into these things, or if he'd get the hints at all. Though even she has to admit she got a little blatant there towards the end.
Over and over, many setting suns I have run, I have waited for the rain to come When through that mist, I see the shape of you And I know, and I know That I'm in love with you
She's not sure when she realized the depth of her feelings, it just sort of happened. One day she looked at him and suddenly and simply thought I could spend the rest of my life with this man. And she wants to.
There were a lot of uncertainties still, and in the grand scheme of things she knows she should probably slow down- Peter was certainly making a valiant effort to- but maybe it had something to do with the constant danger or the constant closeness or both, but she'd made up her mind. ]
[ A beat, then, ] ... And if you could pretend to enjoy it if it sucks, that'd be awesome.
[ One of these days it'll click for Peter, too -- probably under extreme duress, or when one of their companions slaps him upside the head and tells him how thick he's being. For now, all he knows is that he's happier now than he has been in a long time. ]

You have to use this ability for good. Don't let yourself be swayed by the temptations of the Dark Side.
