Let it be known I wasn't lookin' to embarrass you when I came to see you. All I wanted to do was say a quick thanks and take my leave. You've got no one to blame but yourself for this.
[ She laughs. ] Well, at least you're honest about it.
[ It takes a little longer to get to the tunnels these days, thanks to the giant hole they all live in now, but eventually they head down into the dim light. Maya fishes her pistol out of her digistruct device and holsters it on her hip, just in case. ]
[ For Peter's part, he triggers on his mask the moment they head down the first few steps, blue light flaring to life and disappearing, leaving metal in its wake. It doesn't help much for the darkness, but it's better than his normal vision, at the very least. That, and it's badass. Makes him feel badass, and that's an admission he'll never make aloud.
His blasters are always holstered at his hips -- at this point, he never leaves his housing block without them -- and at this point he takes up one, leaving his other hand free, just in case. ]
Last call for backin' out, Siren. No one will think any less of you. 'Cept me. Because I'll be laughing.
[ -- Damn, that's seriously cool. He wishes he had light-up tattoos. He grins in return, and though it goes hidden behind his mask, his amusement shines through in his voice. ]
Save that moxie for the beasties, Maya.
[ The first few feet into the tunnels are quiet, but Peter doesn't drop his guard. More than a few times he had been caught off guard by some creature that only shimmered into view seconds before jumping him, and only his reflexes were enough to save him. They're not mistakes he cares to repeat. ]
[ Peter with light-up tattoos would be a sight to see- but keep dreaming. Being a Siren is a ladies-only sort of club.
Maya has her little orb of light up- because seriously fuck the dark- and she's keeping an eye out. Something slithers off to the side, but vanishes into the shadows before she can get a bead on it. Ugh, snaky things are always the worst. ]
[ He catches the movement too, but-- seeing as how it's not immediately leaping at them, he holds his fire. The calm before the inevitable shitstorm is always the worst part, he thinks. Once the first shot goes off? That's when hell breaks loose. That's when things get fun.
Or painful. It depends on the day, really.
There's more slithering movement, he thinks, or at least the quiet brush of stone and dirt being moved through and aside. Peter grabs up his second blaster. You know, just in case. ]
[ Not for the first time, Maya hears a familiar noise in the tunnels- a sort of low trill coming from further down, where the slithering sounds seem to be moving to. She's gotten used to seeing skags around- a little taste of home- but this sound is enough to make her stop walking. ]
I guess it... sort of depends. I'm pretty sure that's a thresher- big wormy thing with tentacles. It's just that some threshers are more deadly than others, and I'm not sure what kind we're gonna find.
I'm not keen on letting a thresher learn to love me in any capacity. I have a friend who lost an arm to one of those things. And a leg. And an eye, too, I think.
I mean, it was several stories tall, so I don't think we'll have to worry about something like that in a small space like this.
As long as we keep our distance, we'll be fine. Just go for the eyes and the tentacles and---
[ She only has a split second to realize what's coming next. She feels a light tug, and she nearly loses her footing as rocks and dust and debris get pulled forward. It's not enough to knock them down or totally suck them forward just yet.
Motherfucking wormhole threshers. ]
Shitshitshit-- [ She turns to Peter, grabbing him by the arm. ] Run.
[ Peter feels the same pull, and-- okay, that's definitely new. It's like a magnet got flipped on, and it's doing its level best to tug them forward--
And then Maya's swearing (which, you know, totally reassuring) and grabbing his arm, and, yeah, at that point? Probably a good idea to listen to the expert. And Peter's good at following directions, when it comes to big, scary, alien monsters. ]
[ Will suddenly pull them forward as though they're caught in a vacuum, which it does. No wonder the tunnels were so empty right here. The damn thing must have sucked everything else to it. With nothing to hold onto but Peter's arm, the pair are sent hurtling down the tunnel at frightening speed.
The thresher is a short ways down the tunnel, illuminated by a strange glow as it sucks its prey in. It's covered in spikes, on which are the impaled bodies of a few smaller creatures already.
Man, fuck these fucking things.
Maya clings to Peter for all she's worth, because she knows her shield is the only thing that's going to stop them from meeting a messy end. ]
That's his primary thought as they're sucked down the tunnel, and it repeats over and over, like a stuck record, and he's seriously fucking glad that Maya grabbed him when she did, because there's a brief flare of light when her shields meeting the end of a spike that probably would've gutted him.
Holy fucking shit.
And even before she shouts, he's shooting, because, um, that's probably the most natural and correct course of action to take in a situation like this, or at least it is in the Peter Quill Survival Guide. Blasts of fire hit the creature full on in the face, all sharp needle teeth and tentacles and--
-- You know, he knew a girl who looked like that, once. He wonders if maybe this is her extremely distant cousin? ]
[ Once they come to a very sudden stop, thanks to the Flame of the Firehawk clipped to her belt, Maya knows they only have a matter of time. Blue light is flashing all around them as her shield weakens.
The thresher isn't making it easy on them either, flailing around as the blasts from Peter's weapons set it ablaze. Her phaselock won't do them much good- she doesn't know what it is about threshers, but she's never been able to pick one up. Too big, maybe.
She does manage to pull her pistol free and lets off a couple of shots, a cloud of acid erupting to join the flames. With a final screech, the thresher's spikes retract, and it tries to slink away as the elements slowly kill it.
Maya's breathing hard, buzzing with adrenaline, one arm still locked around Peter's ]
[ -- That's about the long and short of it, really, once the creature screams its last and disappears beneath the ground.
Peter really hopes it's dead, because he does not want a repeat performance of that.
He lets his arms drop to his sides (well, one of them anyway; the one Maya's got a hold on just sort of relaxes). For now they're afforded a brief reprieve from monster killing, and Peter's hands are still sort of shaking from the adrenaline in his system. ]
