He's silent as he focuses on his work, then something catches his eye. That long line is different from the usual pattern, slightly out of place. He runs a finger along it and it lights up, glows a sort of aquamarine. ]
Guess we're supposed to find where the patterns don't match up. [ He notices another and traces it with a fingertip -- again with the same result. ]
Anything to force us to stare at how expensive-looking this crap is, right?
[ After a while, Peter is pretty sure he's got most of his side lit up like a Christmas tree, but the going is tedious, and he's never been a patient person. ]
[ She valiantly pretends that she didn't hear that and focuses on the wall until she's finished. When she steps back to join him, she's finally got her blushing under control. ]
All this just to open a door. This had better be worth it.
[ The wall is positively glowing at this point-- and for a few seconds, nothing happens, and Peter is about to express his annoyance with a few choice words (mostly containing "fuck" and "shit" and "god dammit,") when a slight tremor in the floor alerts him to movement.
The wall recedes slightly, then slides left, and Peter sighs with relief when it reveals a normal, if not overly large, vault door. ]
[ He moves the vault door, and expects to have to listen at the door to unlock it-- but it opens up easily. Clearly the guy was expecting all the previous challenges to stop any would-be robbers.
... And the door reveals a huge room with crates, not unlike the one shown at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, which makes Peter mutter, ] "Top. Men."
[ If nothing else, the guy has shown himself to be anally organized, if the plaques signifying what sector the items in each aisle hailed from is any indication. ]
Okay, we were looking for a Jittanian artifact, right? And at this point we're agreed to help ourselves to anything else that seems worth taking.
[ That just makes Maya roll her eyes and mutter back, ] Thanks, Indy.
[ It's a lot bigger in here than she was expecting, so thank god for anal-retentive labeling schemes ] After all the shit we've gone through to get here? You bet we are.
[ For his part, Peter starts whistling the tune from "The Walker" as he examines the shelves. It would seem their illustrious host is an avid collector of artifacts. Peter's pretty sure most of the stuff in here is invaluable, but never being one to remember a lot regarding galactic history, it's pretty much lost on him.
He passes by shelves of artwork and religious totems and weaponry, keeping an eye out for the artifact they were meant to find for their buyer and anything else that might look interesting. What he ends up with are two knives for Drax and Gamora, an etching of some alien flower for Groot, and a small, flat device the size of his palm for Rocket. He has no idea what it is, but he figures Rocket would find it interesting. All of it tucks easily into his coat and lies flush against his chest.
Also, Peter is secretly amused by the idea of treating the vault as a giftshop, but that's neither here nor there. ]
[ She actually stops and smiles to herself when she hears him whistling. It's nice to know he really does appreciate her present.
She's poking around through shelves and crates, and man there are lots of things she would love to take, but since they only have Peter's pockets to get them out of here, most of it stays where it is. ]
Not yet-- oh. That is lovely. [ There is a pistol sitting behind a few other odds and ends, obviously forgotten, but for Maya she may as well have hit the jackpot. She takes it up carefully and dusts it off ] Where were you ten minutes ago?
Maya, you know keeping a weapon like that is a big responsibility. You'll have to clean it and maintain it, and what'll happen when you get tired of it? It'll all fall on me.
